The International Scholars program at the University of British Columbia is currently accepting applications from students. UBC’s International Scholars Program offers four categories of exceptional need- and merit-based grants to international students:
Karen McKellin International Leadership Award for the Future:
This award recognizes exceptional prospective international undergraduate candidates who have demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities by actively listening to others, demonstrating empathy, and working together, in addition to excelling academically.
Award for International Students, Donald A. Wehrung:
Honors exceptional international undergraduates who have overcome extreme obstacles to attain academic success and who, without substantial financial aid, would not be able to attend college. They come from poor or war-torn regions.
International Impact Award:
The award is presented to exceptional students who have exhibited leadership qualities and a commitment to addressing issues related to sustainability, social justice, equity, and inclusion, as well as natural resource management and conservation. Priority is accorded to learners from a variety of living situations and first-generation learners.
Furthermore, the Vantage One Excellence Award is provided by UBC Vantage College to academically exceptional international students who have not yet met the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC.

The value of the UBC International Scholars Program is determined by your financial need. The total of tuition, fees, and living expenses is used to determine financial need after the annual contribution that you and your family can afford is deducted. A typical requirements assessment is predicated on the financial data that you and your family provide.
Your award may be extended for an additional three years of undergraduate study or until you complete your degree, whichever occurs first, provided that you maintain your Canadian study permit (student visa), maintain satisfactory academic standing in your faculty, and continue to demonstrate financial need.
Requirements:
Application to the International Scholars Program necessitates:
- To study in Canada, one must possess genuine study permission and be an international student.
- You must be transferring from an approved secondary school or have completed your first year at another university or post-secondary college to enroll at UBC.
- You must have completed high school no earlier than June two years before the academic year to which you are applying. For instance, applicants for the Winter session of must have completed their secondary school education no earlier.
- The application must be for your initial undergraduate degree.
- You must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, such as obtaining all As or a comparable standard.
- To continue with a UBC degree, you must demonstrate that you have a sufficient financial need and are unable to do so otherwise.
- To be admitted to UBC, you must satisfy the general and degree-specific requirements, as well as the English Language Admission Standard.
The Vantage One Excellence Award will be considered applicants if:
- To be admitted directly to UBC, you must not have yet met UBC’s English Language Admission Standard. All other eligibility criteria remain unchanged.
- To be admitted to UBC Vantage College, you must satisfy the Vantage College English proficiency criteria.
- You must withdraw from secondary school without delay.
- You must commence your undergraduate studies at UBC to qualify for the UBC Vantage One Program.
Guidelines for applications:
You must be recommended for the International Scholars program by your institution or non-profit, and you must also submit a reference from an academic colleague. Confirm whether your non-profit or institution can nominate you. Inform your academic referee and nominator that you wish to apply for the International Scholars Program. Upon submission of your application, UBC will evaluate your eligibility for all available awards; you will not be permitted to select which one to accept.
For the International Scholars Program, please submit your application by November 15th, and for UBC admissions, please consider submitting it by December 1st. The English Language Admission Requirement at UBC must be met.
