Permissible extensions to the eligibility period
- The window of eligibility may be extended by up to three years if the applicant has experienced career interruptions as a result of a variety of extenuating circumstances, such as illness, mandatory military service, war, civil conflicts, natural disasters, socio-economic reasons, lack of research opportunities, or pandemics. The extension will be granted for the duration of the eligible delay(s) or interruption(s).
- A “career interruption” is a period in which the candidate’s research productivity was completely suspended, and they were not employed (either full-time or part-time).
- The eligibility window for health professionals may be extended by the duration of post-degree clinical training, such as a residency.
- Please reach out to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat to determine whether an extension to the eligibility timeframe is permissible for professions that necessitate post-degree training for certification by a professional organization.
- Interruptions that could potentially prolong the completion of your degree must have occurred after the completion of all prerequisites and before the application deadline.
- The Special Circumstances attachment necessitates justification.
The date on which the applicant completed all necessary steps to obtain their degree is denoted by the phrase “fulfilled all requirements of the degree.” These requirements typically entail thesis defense revisions and thesis depositions, which may differ based on the institution and degree type. No, convocation is not a compulsory degree requirement.
Eligibility of host institution
Qualified institutions for harboring a Banting postdoctoral researcher include Canadian and international universities, connected research hospitals, colleges, and not-for-profit organizations that possess a strong research focus and capability.
For-profit organizations and Canadian administrations at all levels are not eligible to serve as host institutions.
Additional eligibility limitations
Applicants who have received postdoctoral fellowships from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC are eligible to apply for the 2023–24 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships provided that their funding officially concludes on or before September 30, 2024, and before the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship commences. It is prohibited to prematurely terminate the agency-specific postdoctoral award to register for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program.
Applicants are permitted to submit applications for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program and other agency-specific postdoctoral fellowship programs concurrently, provided that the proposed research in each application is consistent with the mandate of the federal granting agency to which it is sent. Please refer to the section titled “Identify area of research” for additional information.
Applicants who are successful in both categories will be required to determine which award they wish to accept.
Applicants must not be presently employed in a tenure-track or tenured academic position, or be on leave from such a position. A permanent academic position, known as tenure or tenure track, typically entails the ability to establish a research team, pursue external funding for research projects as a principal investigator, and engage in teaching. (If you are unsure, please contact the Vanier-Banting Secretariat.)
A Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship is seldom granted to an applicant who continues to work at the institution or research environment where they obtained their Ph.D., PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree.
If applicants elect to apply to the same institution or research environment where they obtained their Ph.D. or equivalent degree, they must submit a compelling explanation in the Special Circumstances attachment.
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program permits each applicant to submit a single application per competition year.
Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are always available.
- Are exclusively valid at the institution that sponsored the initial program application;
- The process must be initiated between April 1st and October 1st of the year following the application.
