The University of British Columbia provides a four-year doctoral fellowship (4YF) program to both domestic and international scholars in Canada.

This program enables UBC to attract and support exceptional domestic and international doctoral students, while also providing them with consistent, foundational funding for their research and coursework.

  • Course Level: Students who are pursuing Ph.D. degrees are eligible for fellowships.
  • Fellowships are awarded in all academic disciplines that the institution provides.
  • They will receive a scholarship award of $18,200 per year, in addition to tuition, for a maximum of four years during their doctoral studies.
  • The total quantity of awards is uncertain.
  • Scholarships are accessible in Canada.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Four-year fellowships are available to both domestic and international scholars. The grants are frequently awarded to students who are commencing their first year of Ph.D., DMA, or MDPhD study; however, continuing students may also qualify.

4YF financing may be granted for a maximum of four years; however, in certain circumstances, the duration of the funding may be shorter (please consult the 4YF Guidelines for further information). Adequate academic advancement is always a prerequisite for funding.

  • Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD)
  • CIHR Doctoral Research Awards
  • NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD)
  • Holders of SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are immediately eligible for 4YF designation.

The 4YF stipend and tuition support will be provided to doctoral students who receive Tri-Agency scholarships until the end of their fifth year in the doctoral program or four years after the start date of the external award, whichever occurs first, once their external scholarship funding expires.

Upon the expiration of their external scholarship funding, other significant external scholarship recipients who are selected as 4YF designates may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage. They will receive a 4YF stipend and tuition support until the end of their fifth year in a doctoral program or four years after the 4YF start date, whichever occurs first.

Nationality: These scholarships are open to both domestic and international students.
