Requirements

To be eligible for the Vanier Scholarship at the University of British Columbia, the following criteria must be satisfied:

• A Vanier CGS quota must have been obtained by a single Canadian institution to propose to you.
• Enroll in a doctoral program for the first time, including joint programs such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., or JD/Ph.D., provided that they have a strong and demonstrated research component.
• Plan to pursue full-time doctoral (or dual graduate research program, such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., or JD/Ph.D.) studies and research at the nominated institution in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of the results.
• No more than 20 months of full-time study in your Ph.D. program must have been completed by May 1, 2024.
• The doctoral program would commence upon the completion of a Master’s degree. The number of study months completed is determined by the date of doctoral enrollment.
• If you are currently enrolled in a combined graduate research program, such as an MD/Ph.D., MA/Ph.D., or DVM/Ph.D., you must have completed a minimum of 32 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by May 1, 2024. This requirement applies to accelerated, joint graduate research programs, and those who were previously enrolled without a Master’s degree.

Program duration

Candidates in this category are eligible for the 32-month window regardless of whether they had previously been enrolled in a Master’s program:

• The number of months of study is determined on the day an applicant is formally registered in the joint program, which includes the Master’s component.

How-to-Apply:

Applicants are advised to consult the Vanier CGS website for the comprehensive application guidelines detailed below. Applicants are required to accomplish the following to apply before the aforementioned date:

• Notify the UBC graduate program of their preference that they intend to apply for the Vanier CGS.

This is an essential stage, as your application must be supported (nominated) by your UBC graduate program to advance to the university-wide round of the award competition.

• Provide official, current transcripts to the UBC graduate program for all post-secondary courses, including those that did not result in a degree, such as exchange or transfer course marks, until the end of August.
• Request four letters of recommendation from individuals:

Referees electronically submit two leadership reference letters through ResearchNet, and the applicant uploads the letters to their electronic application file. The applicant’s academic excellence, research potential, and demonstrated prospective leadership ability are assessed in the letters.

Referees are encouraged to review Vanier’s EDI resources to incorporate EDI considerations into their reference letters.
