Concerning Carleton University

Due to its origins as a non-denominational college that was partially funded by charitable donations from the Ottawa community, Carleton University is unique among the institutions in Ontario. In response to the necessity of providing Ottawa’s youth—many of whom had accepted employment to alleviate the effects of the Great Depression—with the opportunity to pursue formal education, Carleton University was founded in 1942.

A vibrant research and teaching organization with a legacy of leading and predicting change, Carleton University began as a small institution on First Avenue in Ottawa. The institution is presently situated on a site that spans over 100 acres and is situated between the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, not far from downtown Ottawa.

The university provides an exceptional education and experience to its nearly 24,000 full- and part-time students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The scholarly work and innovative research of its over 875 academic staff members in over 50 disciplines are highly regarded worldwide.

The reputation of Carleton University is built upon its strengths in advanced technology, architecture, public affairs, and foreign affairs. The university’s students benefit from the interdisciplinary, active, hands-on approach to teaching and research of its faculty members, as well as its numerous connections with the federal government, other universities, and the commercial sector.
